DIETs - Overview

District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs)

Introduction

DIETs were established in 1987-88 under a centrally sponsored program to offer pre-service and in-service training to elementary school teachers. These institutes also support adult and non-formal education and engage in relevant innovation and experimentation at the district level.

Objectives of DIETs

  • Provide educational and teaching-learning material (TLM) support for primary and adult education programs.
  • Contribute to eradicating adult illiteracy and achieving Universal Elementary Education (UEE).
  • Implement strategies initiated by central or state authorities at the district level.
  • Offer educational and technical help to grassroots level schools, teachers, and children.
  • Provide guidance in research, training, planning, and administration for elementary education institutions.

Functions of DIETs

  1. Develop, organize, manage, and supervise training programs for elementary school teachers and educational staff.
  2. Provide educational resource support at the district level.
  3. Act as a research center for educational innovation and implementation of new teaching methodologies.
  4. Provide academic support to ensure the success of elementary and adult education strategies and programs.

Additional Functions

  • Facilitate the achievement of UEE goals.
  • Coordinate with district-level departments to monitor the implementation of elementary education programs.
  • Conduct surveys to assess the needs of teachers and design relevant training modules.
  • Provide training to school heads, teachers, School Management and Development Committees (SMDC), and other educational stakeholders.
  • Identify resource persons who can assist in DIETs programs.
  • Provide teaching and learning materials and evaluation tools to elementary-level institutions.
  • Support state agencies with data and other resources for improving education systems.
  • Monitor the progress of learning imparted in schools and evolve local-specific monitoring mechanisms.
  • Evaluate educational schemes and programs initiated by the department.
  • Collaborate with various projects to implement new initiatives and build community capacity.
  • Conduct exams for various professional courses like KPSC, commerce, Hindi, and music.
  • Serve as a model agency for centralized admission to D.Ed courses.
